Clean Whole Wheat Bread Recipe

clean bread

  • 3 ½ cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 2 Tbs. olive oil
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1 tsp. whole grain rolled oats
  • 1 tsp. ground flaxseed

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 ½ cups flour, salt, and yeast. In another bowl, combine oil, water, and honey. Make sure the water isn’t too hot, or it will kill the yeast. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients. Using an electric mixer, blend on medium speed for 3 minutes.

Then, by hand, gradually stir in the remaining flour until a firm dough forms. Kneed on a floured surface for 5 minutes. Cover the dough in an oiled bowl for 40 minutes to allow it to rise.

Push 2 fingers into the risen dough; if holes remain, it’s ready to shape. Turn dough onto floured surface, and punch down to remove air bubbles. Roll or shape dough into a loaf-sized rectangle. Place in an oiled 9×5 loaf pan. Cover, and let it rise an additional 40 minutes.

If desired, sprinkle the top of the dough with oats and/or flaxseed. Bake at 375 ° F for 30 minutes. Remove from pan, and cool on rack. This bread is somewhat dense, but very healthy, natural, and tasty!

  2. This clean whole wheat bread is awesome! I’ve been looking for a good ww recipe with no refined sugar. I was a little bit nervous when I read that this one said it was a little dense, but tried it anyway. It smelled so good coming out of the oven, I dove right into it. It’s not dense at all for ww bread! It very soft & fluffy, but still a little chewy… Perfect! I love it! Thanks for the recipe!
